Sounds trickle through vents in the ceiling: rolling Atlantic waves, children playing, birds, leaves, airplanes.
The initial impression, a subtle feeling that one might be in North Central Florida, or, ....

The “place” described by the sounds in the ceiling vent seems to naturally be one upon initial listening,
but that “place” is really a collage of recordings made in different locations and times, slowly changing, a reproduction.

The vents are also not really vents; there are two ventilation covers installed into the ceiling
which look exactly like the third, which does serve its' intended function.
These contain hidden hand-made wooden reverb-boxes and audiophile speakers connected to an amplifier and cd player on the floor above.

My naive notion was that Florida was a vast jungle swamp with humanity bordering the edge of it’s wild regions.
The reality I experienced upon visiting was an amazing variety of plants and wildlife, existing in seemingly primeval swamps and pristine bays, interwoven with suburban houses, airports, golf courses, highways, and strip malls.
The sounds were recorded in various locations in North Central Florida, USA, during a February 2003 residency at the Atlantic Center for the Arts.

A human skeletal form was made by weaving 1/4" audio tape through acrylic pegs attached to the plexiglas. From the hand a loop of audio tape played through a reel to reel audio tape player to small speakers. The recording was of my footsteps in underbrush. A video of Turnbull Bay, Florida was projected on to the plexiglas. A 60 minute ambient audio recording of parks and nature preserves in North Central Florida played in the space.

Based on video and audio recordings gathered during a residency at Atlantic Center For The Arts, New Smyrna, Florida, February 2003.
